So... turns out internet cafes aren't as common as they once were. To make a long story short, I've been mooching off hotel wi-fi and the computers of my classmates, which was made it slightly difficult to post. Since the little netbook I'm currently borrowing refuses to load my pictures faster that one every ten minutes, here is a brief update and a teaser pic until I can try again:
I'm in Greece! Today we took a tram out to the coast at Voulas and it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. The water was so warm and clear, and when the sun poked through the clouds it was a bright turquoise color. The beaches had the most incredible assortment of colorful pebbles - we spent hours walking up and down collecting the smoothest, brightest ones. But let's rewind a little.
Pompeii looks like California. Naples is a trash heap. Both are charming in their own way. We visited all sorts of archaeological sites between the two - each a ghost town in its own right. Terribly exciting. Seriously. Florence was incredible - all the charm of Rome minus the tourists and smoke. Or...at least there are less tourists. I got to climb the Duomo and hike to a monastery to hear the monks sing. One early morning bus ride and an EasyJet flight later (Mom - my suitcase fits perfectly if I can manage never to make the top poke out) we arrived in Athens, which is so unlike anything I pictured.
A few quick facts:
- Heard 90 - 100 ambulance sirens while staying in Italy (I swear, I counted.)
- Europe believes in small elevators and spiral staircases.
- Driving in Italy is terrifying (some members gave us a ride back to the train station last week.)
- If seeing everything written in Italian was weird, seeing a foreign alphabet is ten times stranger.
- In Greece you can't flush your toilet paper. It makes public bathrooms pretty rough.
- My hotel showers keep getting smaller and smaller.
- I think I'm finally past all the sore muscles.
- Bakhlava in Greece is pure heaven.
Hopefully more soon!
